B

Busines Model

IL MODELLO B2B

In the Business-to-Business (B2B) model of the spin-off, manufacturers of parts of commercial products (OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturers), and companies that produce and supply products to end customers. In this context, the University of Udine is configured as a provider of research services within specific contracts, allowing access to the latest scientific and technological developments, which can then adopted used by the spin-off and industrialized according to customer needs.

Koala Electronics Srl

Spin-off of the University of Udine

INNOVATIV START-UP

Koala Electronics srl is a spin-off of the University of Udine, founded in July 2017 and registered in the special section of the Italian register of companies for innovative start-ups.

The company intends to leverage the university know-how, bringing the results of academic research and development to the market, through the industrialization of electronic and electromechanical solutions for distributed generation, sustainable mobility, mechatronic systems and energy conversion in general, which are intended to customize for different applications and customers.

O

Our story

The reference markets are those affected by these technological areas, such as that of electric vehicles and related components, that of micro co-generators and the production of energy from renewable sources, as well as those supporting the deployment of Industry 4.0 concepts.

A distinctive element of Koala Electronics is its ability to approach problems in an integrated way, thanks to multi-disciplinary knowledge and the synergy between university and industrial way of thinking.
In fact, the members come partly from the industrial world and partly from the academic one. In addition to the company MetaSystem Group SpA and the University of Udine, the company is made up of a group of people who have already actively collaborated in the past on research and development projects, as university professors, researchers, freelancers or employees of companies.
The founding partners of Koala Electronics are a heterogeneous group in terms of training and professional path, but with a common passion for technology and innovation. The core expertise is in the field of electronics, in particular in energy conversion (both electric-electric and electro-mechanical). Roberto Petrella, associate professor at the University of Udine and the real driving force behind the initiative, Prof. Silverio Bolognani, full professor at the University of Padova and Sandro Calligaro, currently a researcher at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, are involved in research in this field. Giorgio Maldini works in the electronics industry, particularly in the automotive sector, managing innovation and production at MetaSystem SpA, while Nicola Bedetti is currently Technical Director (for the section dealing with motor control) at Gefran SpA, but previously worked in the automotive and consumer industries. Giuseppe Toniato, a mechanical engineer and co-founder and administrator of Kaymacor srl, has been involved for long time in innovation for a large company, in the field of heating systems and devices. Gilberto Iob holds a degree in computer science and is an expert in programming, especially for embedded systems and real-time applications.
Following the development of some solutions and technologies, in which several partners of the team have participated, it was decided to undertake the path towards the creation of a company.

The projects currently underway range in various areas, from that of thermal co-generation to electrical propulsion in small ships. Koala Electronics’ diverse expertise, in fact, allows the company to manage multi-disciplinary aspects and new problems, thanks to the university background and the concreteness of engineering coming from the industrial approach. Thanks to the numerous contacts with companies in various related sectors and the scientific research work carried out in universities by some of its members, Koala Electronics is constantly updated on the technological state-of-the-art related to components, processing and control methods, leading to effective adoption of the most innovative solutions.
